Our Plans

We look forward to opening in early 2022. The bookstore will offer new hardcover and paperback books, with a focus on current events titles and non-fiction. Hooked will also offer fiction books, featuring newly released fiction and titles that align with thematic areas highlighted in our monthly featured topics. There will be a children’s book section with a small play area. Hooked will offer quick online ordering for in-store pickup or delivery.

The coffee shop will offer premium coffee and tea products, including espresso drinks, from a third wave direct trade coffee vendor. Specialty drip and pour over coffee will also be available to taste across regions and varietals in guided “flights” (at designated times). Hooked will offer locally sourced baked goods, including pastries, cookies, muffins, and scones (fresh daily). We will also sell whole and ground coffee beans in one-pound bags.

The wine bar will offer ~40 wines by the glass, organized into themed wine flights with extensive tasting notes. Coravin systems and aerators will keep all bottles fresh, extracting one glass at a time. The wine menu will rotate monthly. We will offer all bottles for sale, including within wine clubs for different styles. Hooked will also offer Michigan microbrew bottled beer, along with bottled juices and cold coffee drinks. We will have a limited food menu, including charcuterie boards and locally sourced desserts: cakes, brownies, pastries. We will also have high-cacao chocolate bars and CBD edibles.

Hooked will offer book-of-the-month, coffee-of-the-month, and wine-of-the-month clubs in different genres and varietals. Members will be able to taste/sample before they choose. We will also integrate several genre-based community book clubs that meet on-premises at the wine bar, including both expert-led readings and crowdsourced community clubs.

Hooked will become a community institution and aim to have near-daily events, including the community book clubs. These will include regular book signings and readings, partnering with university departments hosting visiting authors and speakers, local author events, and guided book-talks by faculty and other local experts. Hooked will also have regular readings for children and youth.

Independent bookstores and coffee shops are surviving against national competition and thriving in diverse markets because they are seen as community staples and gathering spaces that locals want to patronize and browse. We are so excited to invite the Lansing community to join us at Hooked, as a new and welcoming community space to eat, drink, meet, explore, and engage.
